Applications are now being accepted for the STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP) sponsored by NM EPSCoR and the NM SMART Grid Center. Undergraduate students from New Mexico’s regional universities, community colleges, and tribal colleges are eligible to apply. Deadline: February 21, 2020.

Up to 12 students will be selected to spend 8 weeks at the main campus of NMSU, NMT, or UNM working on research in engineering, computer science, and cyber security. Benefits include a $4,000 stipend, housing, and meal allowance. Potential research projects include

Simulating an electric power system using hardware-in-the-loop and microgrid testbeds.
Studying the public’s perceptions about new energy technologies (e.g., solar panels or smart meters) by extracting data from social media.
Developing a smart home scheduler to minimize energy consumption by using information about available smart devices and user preferences.
Visually analyzing smart grid data and find frequent patterns of energy usage using new methods for time-series data processing.
Studying adversarial machine learning attacks on smart grid infrastructure to improve efficiency and resilience to such attacks.
Studying the use of block chains (the same technology used for BitCoin) for energy trading in the smart grid.

The New Mexico SMART Grid Center is an interdisciplinary National Science Foundation project that is pursuing research and workforce training for next-generation electric power production and delivery.
