NM House Bill 270, Allow Homeschool teams to participate in academic activities

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

House Bill 270, which would allow homeschool teams to participate in academic activities (i.e. sports, chess, speech and debate, etc.), is currently on the New Mexico House Floor Calendar. This means the bill could be voted on today or in the near future. Please contact your state representative and urge him or her to support HB 270.

While HSLDA is typically neutral on equal access bills, we believe this bill should be supported. We stand with the Christian Association of Parent Educators-New Mexico (CAPE-NM) in requesting that you contact your state representative to urge his or her support.

You can contact state representative and give him or her the following message in your own words:

“Please support House Bill 270. This bill will allow homeschool teams to participate in academic activities across the state in the same manner as other schools. While several New Mexico associations have homeschool teams or do allow homeschool students to participate, some do not. Please vote to support House Bill 270.”

Under House Bill 270, any homeschool parent, guardian or other person having custody of a school-age person who organizes a team consisting of homeschool students may participate in academic activities that are regulated by an association under New Mexico laws Section 22-2-2 NMSA 1978. The homeschool team would be eligible as a regular member and could participate in that activity.

For many years, several associations have allowed homeschool teams to participate. However, more recently these homeschool teams are facing resistance to their participation. We believe this needs to be changed. Please call now!

Thanks for your advocacy on behalf of home school students in New Mexico,
HSLDA
