“A+ Correspondence Driving School“
The State of New Mexico recognizes two types of driver education programs for students under the age of 18 obtaining their driver’s license for the first time:
30 hours of classroom instruction combined with 7 hours of behind-the-wheel training
OR
56 hours of classroom instruction with 0 hours of behind-the-wheel training
We choose the second option, we will be doing 50+ hours of driving time during the Stage 2 Provisional License already, and the time and cost was a major factor. With correspondence you have up to 8 weeks to completely read the textbook (Responsible Driving), write two papers, and answer 4 unit tests. Mr. Abel Romero with A+ mails the book, an enrollment packet, and curriculum outline to follow for your student. You will need to upload the work in a .pdf form and email, or mail the work to him. He responds quickly through email with your grades and sends the certificates (needed for Stage 1, Instructional Permit and Class Completion for Stage 2, Provisional License) quickly by mail. You will also need to mail the book back to him at the end of class. The cost was $125 payable by Venmo, Zelle, or check.
*I was recommend to A+ Correspondence Driving by another mom. Many of the schools I researched were over $300. I have also heard stories of schools in Valencia that have been in business over 10 years and would not respond to parents asking for their certificates, after the parents had paid and the students had attended. I am very thankful for this new option!
Step 1. Apply to https://nmtsc.unm.edu/driver-education/ After your child has reached 15 years old, you can apply for permission to take Driver’s Ed by correspondence.
In the application there are Options for why you are requesting correspondence:
1. Homeschool
2. School Status (the HS does not provide Driver’s Ed), Distance, Academic Activities, Extra Curricular Activities, Employment and Extenuating Circumstances
After approval by email, you may pay and start the class.
*After completing the class download; NM Practice Driving Test from Google or Apple. NM MVD made the app to mimic the written test your student will take at MVD. I also would suggest going to Belen MVD as we have never waited more than 15 mins.
There was no monetary gain or any other gain received by my family for this post. I was just happy to have a good option and decide to share it!
